Volunteering with Home-Start Glasgow South

Without our volunteers, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
They’re often a lifeline for local families. Their weekly visits make a real difference to families experiencing challenging circumstances. You’ll find a range of information for volunteer work Glasgow below.

Why volunteer with us?

Volunteers join us for many reasons, but all share the same motivation – the desire to help others.

Volunteering can be extremely rewarding – only a few hours each week can have an immeasurably positive impact. You can make a real impact on both our organisation and on the families you support. Previously supported parents have been so inspired by the support they’ve received that they’ve also chosen to join us – and what better compliment could you receive for the work that you do?

We offer several, exciting volunteering opportunities detailed below.

Here are a few ways you can help.

Fundraising volunteers

Our fundraising volunteers get involved in fun local community activities, amongst other things.

We need volunteers to help us raise funds and represent us at events in and around the South of Glasgow to help raise our profile. This could involve running an event, hosting a stall, being a friendly face and engaging with the community at a local bucket collection, attending a cheque presentation or putting up posters. Your skills and personal interests will help shape this volunteering role. You will meet and be fully supported by our Community Fundraiser, Caitlin, to go through an induction to Home-Start Glasgow South. We will work with you to develop your fundraising journey.

Home-Visiting volunteers

Volunteers visit families in their own homes, providing practical and emotional support once each week.

English Tutoring volunteers

Our English tutors work with parents and children to help improve their language skills.

Our volunteer English tutors support parents to gain and build on basic language skills to give them confidence to get out and meet new people, enter education and perhaps even find work. English tutors visit a family in their home once a week and primarily work on the parents’ language skills to ultimately benefit their children. The aim is for the family to improve their English language and abilities to help them socialise and be more active in their community. Home-Start Glasgow South will support you to help the family you are matched with, however volunteers are encouraged to use their own ideas and experience to plan sessions. There is no set curriculum to follow but we have lots of tips and resources to build on in order to take a practical and active approach to tutoring.

Volunteer as a trustee

Trustees are responsible for our strategic direction and governance. For vacancies, visit our Trustees page.
