We’ve been creating positive change in the lives of local families for over 17 years now and are extremely proud of what we do. It is enormously rewarding hearing what parents, and especially children, have to say about the impact our staff and volunteers have on their lives, and we hope to continue expanding our service and impacting even more families for many years to come.
How Do We Impact Families?
We directly facilitate a wide range of support mechanisms and training sessions through which we aim to change lives. Our central activities are:
- Weekly Home-Visits
- English Tuition
- Family Support Groups
- Intensive Family Support
- Personal Development Courses
- One-off Training Events
- Family Trips
Alongside our in house support structures, we also liaise closely with other local organisations from Housing and Education to statutory Health services, Social Work and many other fantastic local third sector organisations. We’ve worked hard to foster excellent working partnerships with everyone we can and are heavily involved with Glasgow’s JST (Joint Support Team) initiative, working to identify and support families in acute need before they reach crisis point, as well as with specialist local Social Work teams in providing intensive short term support to vulnerable families through our dedicated Family Support Worker.
Some words from our families, volunteers and colleagues
They were very professional, well organised and resourced and had a lovely warm manner with the children and their parents. - A local school on our Group Leaders
Having a volunteer come to into my house made me realise things in a better way than me thinking everyone was judging me and gave me confidence. It was good to have someone other than family friends to listen to me and not judge me. - A parent
Without Home-Start Glasgow South support I don't think I would be where I am now. I learned a lot, I used to panic and be scared to go out, but having my volunteer with me was a big support. - A parent
It felt hard to ask for help at first, but once the volunteer started to visit, I wish I'd done it years ago. - A parent
With Home-Start Glasgow South's help I got through a terrible time, and now my house is full of hope and laughter. - A parent
This was not only an ideal way to role-model for our mums, but also to give them the English language to do it as well. - A teacher about a our visiting Creative Play group.
As soon as we say that my volunteer is coming later, she runs up to the window and says “I want to look for her"! - A parent
I never felt I was doing enough for the family, but hearing what they told the coordinator has made me feel brilliant. Thank you for all your support, and everything you have taught me, I've loved it. - A volunteer.
This has clearly been an extremely beneficial experience for our families. Our mums commented on how they rarely go out except to the shops and how they don't spend time with their children in this manner. - A teacher on our Creative Play group.
It is something that we would love to continue and would welcome any opportunity to have the team return so that we could continue to work alongside our parents and children in a supportive way. - A local Headteacher on our Creative Play sessions.
This experience has helped Mum learn different ways to support her son and increase both their confidence. - A local school on our Creative Play sessions
Our volunteer is brilliant with my daughter, she thinks the world of her. My daughter listens and does things for the volunteer that she won’t do for me. She has an excellent way and understanding about her. She is also a great support to me. - A parent
Knowing that I have the support weekly and that my volunteer is coming to visit me and my children makes me feel so much better. The support I receive from Home-start Glasgow South is something very special. - A parent
Over the past few years the demand for our service has risen sharply and we’re receiving an ever increasing number of referrals each year, from an increasingly eclectic range of sources. Meeting this demand has meant expanding our service area and the breadth of services we offer, as well as recruiting more staff and volunteers.
