A Introduction to Home-Start Glasgow South

Home-Start Glasgow South is a leading family support charity striving to give young children the best possible start in life.  We work with families to help them overcome issues including isolation, mental health difficulties, bereavement, family breakdown, addiction, physical ill-health and many others.

We’ve been supporting local families across the south of Glasgow for 17 years and have grown to become the largest Home-Start in Scotland and one of the largest in the UK.

We exist to improve the lives of parents and their children

Our goal is to help families, it’s as simple as that, and we employ a wide array of support mechanisms to enable us to address individual needs.  At the heart of our service is a dedicated network of Home-Start Glasgow South volunteers.  They are the lifeblood of our organisation, providing vital practical and emotional weekly support to families in their own homes, while for families in more acute need we can also provide intensive family support through our dedicated Family Support Worker.

Alongside our amazing volunteers we also run support groups and courses, provide English tuition and throughout the year facilitate family outings which enable families to share experiences that may otherwise not be possible.  We are continually reviewing and adapting our service to meet changing needs, and everything we do is designed to help parents to overcome hardship and enjoy happier, healthier families.

Our core activities include:

  • Home-Visiting Volunteers
  • Family Support Groups
  • Intensive Family Support
  • English Tuition
  • STEPS and Triple P Courses
  • Family Trips and Events

We offer support to families across the Southside of Glasgow with at least one child under the age of 8.

Our Approach

Personalised Support for Families

O

ur mission is to provide a first class, unique and tailor made service to vulnerable families with at least one child under the age of eight.  We believe that all children need a safe and happy environment in which to grow and develop.  Our service aims to enable parents through informal, non-judgemental and confidential support designed to equip them with the skills and confidence to give their children the best possible start in life and help them achieve their full potential.

We recruit and train volunteers with parenting experience who visit local families once a week, for a minimum of 2-3 hours, to provide parents and children with emotional and practical support with daily life.

We work with families all across the South of Glasgow who are struggling to cope with balancing the challenges of parenthood with sometimes extremely difficult personal circumstances.  We want all families to have access to the resources which will make everyday life less stressful and more enjoyable.  Most of all, we want children to have the best possible start in life.

We understand that every family is unique, which is why our approach does not follow a predefined format and timescale.  We talk to families to understand what they need and design support which is best suited to address their individual requirements.  We believe that families should have access to support until they feel ready and confident enough to take their next steps unaided, and throughout a family’s time with us their needs are regularly reviewed and support is adjusted as required.

We work closely in partnership with a multitude of local organisations ranging from neighbouring charities to statutory health professionals including Health Visitors, Nursing staff, Social Workers and GPs, housing providers, faith groups and everyone in between. What we all have in common is the desire to improve the lives of families in our community.

Home-Start Glasgow South has worked tirelessly to support local families in the South of Glasgow for the past 17 years and is now the largest of 32 independent Home-Start schemes in Scotland, and one of the largest of 269 schemes across the whole of the United Kingdom.
